Wednesday why not read...Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist?

Told in alternating view points, Nick and Norah give us an inside view of the first night they met, what they did, and how they feel about it. Each of them have serious insecurities from previous relationships so they are hesitant to trust each other, or themselves.  I preferred Nick’s voice to Norah’s most of the time.  She seemed whiny and just annoyed me.  Nick is more open than Nora; he’s a bit like me, which is why I probably liked him better.  He says “There isn’t loneliness, only this intense twoliness,” on page 80.  Wow.

I did laugh at some of the things Norah commented on, like on page 163 when she says, “All those Jackie Collins novels Caroline and I read in seventh grade are totally starting to make sense.”  (Serious snickering on my part—I think the first dirty book I read was a Jackie Collins novel.)  My first thought was to give this only three stars because the “F” bomb is dropped so frequently in the first half of the book.  After finishing, I decided on four stars, because it got better about the language, and I loved that the whole thing just swept me up into the story.    I bought Nick and Norah, because I really like David Leviathan’s Every Day.  I have Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares, by Leviathan and Cohn, so I think that’s going on my TBR pile.  I’ve not watched the movie that comes from this, but my students tell me I should.

Monday musings--Christmas sweaters

It's ugly sweater day, here at school.  The Christmas carnage is impressive.  Some are DIY; some, like mine, were gifts; some were found at Goodwill; some were dug out of Grandma's closet; but all are worn in the holiday spirit.  It's a fun way to start off finals week, which starts in earnest on Wednesday. Tests are Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Our volleyball tournament, "Snowball Smash," gets started on Thursday afternoon; finishing up on Friday after the last two finals.   Snowball smash is a competition between student and teacher teams.  It can get dangerous.  Have a great week!

Wednesday Why Not Read...The Night Circus?

This book is quite lovely. It’s so much more than the cover copy states and yet, less. The back cover would have you believe a great love story plays out between Celia and Marco – it does- but it's really secondary story-line material. The real romance is between the circus and its audience.  So much about the circus is a mystery, that is its beauty, its romance; to see the Night Circus in the cold light of day could, but doesn't lessen the appeal.

"Why haven’t you asked me how I do my tricks?” Celia asks, once they have reached the point where she is certain he is not simply being polite about the matter. Fredrick considers the question thoroughly before he responds “Because I do not wish to know,” he says. “I prefer to remain unenlightened, to better appreciate the dark.” (Pg. 183)

Just because we don't understand something, doesn't mean it's not beautiful, wonderful, and marvelous.  Fredrick sums up for me the great romance of the Night Circus. I wouldn’t put this as my number one for the year, but it is definitely in my top 10; I am so glad I read it.

Tuesday TBR (to be read)

Here's what's on this week's reading list.

13316241  The sequel to Croak, which I loved.

333901
Saw the movie preview for this at a publisher's event.  I wouldn't have even looked at it before that.  Hate this cover.

Monday musings

I decided that I would try to set up a schedule for this blog, so I could post more frequently, and be a bit more organized.  This is the plan:
Monday musings--thoughts and things that strike my fancy
Tuesday tbr--to be read lists obviously!
Wednesday why not read... book reviews
Thursday theater--book trailers, books into movies
Friday fandom--those things from Pintrest that caught my eye

Any comments?
