Review: An Ember in the Ashes

I started this book earlier this year and quit about halfway through. I liked it okay, but not enough to finish it unless I had to, well, it made the list, so I had to... I decided to audiobook it, and it was sooooo much better. The readers were great and I actually cared about the characters as I listened. Now I'm ready for the second one!

It's a fantasy, in that it's set in a created world, with a small bit of magic; but I feel like there is so much more, political intrigue, competition between military students for leadership, a little romance, racial issues, cruel parents, spying, and slavery.
