Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
Mare Barrow lives in a world of Reds: the lower class, ordinary laborers, soldiers on the front lines. Cal lives in the world of Silvers: the upper class, rulers with power to manipulate the elements, the officers and generals. When Mare unexpectedly displays the same ability to manipulate electricity, she’s taken in by the royal family for a “makeover” and must pass for a Silver, if she wants her family to survive. Rebels want her for their cause, both royal brothers want her, her family needs her; what’s a girl to do?
This fantasy has lots of things going on in it to catch my students’ attention: a love triangle, political intrigue, war between classes, superpowers, betrayals, and it’s a series. The only frustration is waiting on the sequels.
